Explore Chevy Chase, MD
Chevy Chase is a much coveted community that straddles the border between Northwest Washington DC and Montgomery County, Maryland. It was once unincorporated farmland that a developer bought up to create a “streetcar” suburb for Washington DC about a hundred years ago. Its name comes from “The Ballad of Chevy Chase,” by way of the land’s original owner, which describes a border raid (Chevy) and a hunt (Chase).
Chevy Chase is literally a small town with big houses. Its narrow streets are lined with seasoned, stately homes. Commercial buildings were one-time strictly forbidden. Today, the town has a brick-paved downtown with multi-generational Mom and Pops businesses that signify the stability and tradition of the community. For upscale shopping and dining there is a small strip called the Chevy Chase Pavilion.
Despite its history of being home to world-famous notables, diplomats, members of Congress, war heroes and super models, Chevy Chase has all the components of a small, planned community that make it great for family. It has beautiful public parks, a YMCA, public libraries and some of the best public – yes public – schools in the country. It is home to two country clubs, the exclusive and storied Chevy Chase Club and the Columbus Club where families can dine, swim, work out, play golf and celebrate with community throughout the year.
